Selenite is named after the Greek goddess Selene, which is the goddess of the moon. Officially named in 1747 by J.G. Wellerius when he published Mineralogia, eller Mineralriket
but commonly used well before in Egypt. Often placed outside of sick rooms in ancient Mesopotamia to keep death and evil spirits away its use was recorded in the Bīt Mēseri a ritual tablet. In Spain, it was used to track the cycles of the moon and hung on fruit trees to speed up ripening and growth. Selenite has been used since the earliest years of civilization and is still heavily celebrated and in use now.
