 Why Digestive Bitters are Vital:

Bitters are the missing taste in the modern world, as mainstream/processed foods severely lack bitter flavors, which is thought to lead to many GI upsets and a variety of health concerns. Since bitters aren’t used in Western foods and are so crucial for health, it’s important that we make sure we are getting bitters into our diets. Bloating, gas, heartburn, and feeling uncomfortable after eating is an indicator that your body is having a hard time digesting food. One fantastic way of helping your digestion is by utilizing an herbal digestive bitters tincture on a daily basis. (Also wonderful for times of overindulgence!) Digestive bitters can help improve the proper function of the endocrine, immune, GI, and nervous systems, which trickles down to supporting the whole body’s wellness.

There is a lot of research that’s studied the intricate connection between gut-brain health. Did you know 90% of the serotonin in the body lives in the gut? The mental state of folks who suffer from gastrointestinal issues is often significantly impacted, resulting in further inflammation. Bitters are both stimulating & relaxing, the flavor helps activate the Vagus nerve which can help brain fog & memory, calms the nervous systems, and stimulates salivary glands & the secretion of gastric juices. This prepares our bodies to better accept and digest the food we are about to eat.

Bitters aid the absorption of essential vitamins & eliminate bloating, cramps, gas & indigestion. They also help with constipation and slow/sluggish digestion. We live in a toxic world and bitters are there to help the liver eliminate toxins from foods, while also helping the skin rid of toxins. Chinese Medicine believes bitters stimulate the Heart system, providing a deep sense of ease, as they allow our bodies to rest and restore, sinking into the parasympathetic. Bitters can help us nourish the neurochemicals that allow us to thrive & live as vitally as possible.

Digestive upsets are often a manifestation of emotional and psycho-physical experiences of body & mind. Bitters are known to also greatly help lower the hormone load, particularly estrogen dominance, which can help with reproductive issues that are a result of hormonal imbalances.

If you’ve ever gotten butterflies or nausea over feeling anxious or scared, or felt how the simple thought of food can make your stomach growl, you may have realized how linked the gut and brain must be. A state of mind can directly influence how the body is going to accept and digest food, they both deeply influence each other. Nourishing the gut-brain connection is extremely important for the micro-biome & overall health.

The taste of bitters on the tongue is known to help reduce blood sugar-glucose levels which is thought to help reduce sugar cravings. The bitter flavor is thought of as an exercise for the GI system, detoxification pathways, metabolism, and microbiome. Bitters, especially utilizing nervine-bitters, help smooth muscle tension within the respiratory, reproductive, and GI tract & relaxes the brain.

Bitters help cleanse the system, which can also improve skin health. They are also historically known to be paired with various alcoholic beverages too!
