Why You Should Use Essential Oils While Showering

Applying essential oils to your skin while showering is an effective way to reap the benefits of aromatherapy. The reason for this, as blogger Andrea explains on Frugally Sustainable, is that applying these oils to wet skin allows for "greater, more immediate absorption into the fatty skin tissue." This also means that barely any oil will remain after you rinse and towel off.

Applying them while showering also makes the ritual more fun, rather than purely medicinal.

Here is Andrea's proposed method for oiling in the shower:

Requirements :: 5-20 drops essential oils
Here’s my method for using essential oils in the shower ::
*This method I learned from The Healing Intelligence of Essential Oils
  1. Turn off the shower after washing your hair + skin.
  2. Begin application of oils to wet skin. Please note :: If you have never done this before, start with just a couple (2) drops behind each knee and then work the oil upward. Only when you are 100% confident that an oil is well tolerated (and does not cause any signs/symptoms of sensitivity), increase to the usage amount given below.
  3. Let’s start with the feet! Apply 1 drop to each the top + soles.
  4. Continue upward on the shin and calf by putting 1 drop just outside the shin just below the knee.
  5. Then 1 drop each over the lymph nodes — both left + right — in the groin area.
  6. Then 1-2 drops are put over the solar plexus, over the liver, and 2-5 drops over the abdomen and chest. Please note :: When I use an oil associated with women’s health + my moon time — i.e. clary sage — I like to take time to focus on the application over the uterus and ovaries.
  7. Apply 1-2 drops over the lymph nodes under the arms and 1-2 drops on the throat area.
  8. If you like the way the oil feels on your skin, you can make a quick sweep over your face. *Don’t apply another drop, simply use the oil already on your hands.
  9. Breathe deeply.
  10. Turn the shower back on and give the body a quick rinse.
  11. Take caution when exiting the shower, gently towel skin by patting dry.
