5 Ayurvedic Sunburn Remedies for Deep Healing

by Faye Sakellaridis

For those of us who enjoy toasting our bodies under the sun, a sunburn is hard to avoid, no matter how assiduously we apply our sun screen. Not only are they painful, they can last for weeks, and the damage is deeper than the eye can see. Unfortunately, the common treatments most people reach for are at best, not very effective, and at worst, harmful. In this India.com piece, Poorvi Adavi explains that sunburn damage is a “deep-rooted problem” that skin creams are “not enough to fight and treat.” And while ice cubes may sound like a quick and obvious pain relief, they can damage the skin further, and even cause frostbite.

That’s where Ayurveda, a 5,000 year old system of traditional Hindu medicine, comes in. Adavi lays out 5 simple ayurvedic remedies that get absorbed by the skin, treating and refreshing the sunburn at the deepest level.

They’re so simple that two of them are probably already in your fridge:

2. Cucumber and lemon juice

The cooling nature of cucumber is helpful in reducing the pain and redness of a sunburn. Crush one cucumber into a paste, add two tablespoons of lemon juice, and apply onto the skin with cotton. Leave this mixture on for 15 minutes and wash.

3. Watermelon

This refreshing summer fruit has innumerable benefits. Eating watermelon is extremely beneficial for your health during summer, but do not throw away the watermelon rind after cutting out the delicious part! Rub the fleshy part of the watermelon rind to your skin–this calms your skin and helps tone down blisters or redness caused by sunburns.
