3 Amazing Health Benefits of Mangosteen

 by Faye Sakellaridis

The succulent mangosteen fruit grows on the mangosteen tree, whose botanical name is Gardenia mangostana and is believed to have originated in Indonesia, and grows mainly in tropical areas. The fruit contains a thick outer rind that is usually dark red or purple, and soft, white flesh on the inside.  The flesh is known for having a sweet-tart flavor that is exceptionally delectable. In an old New York Times piece about mangosteen’s allure, writer R. W. Apple Jr writes: “No other fruit, for me, is so thrillingly, intoxicatingly luscious… I’d rather eat one than a hot fudge sundae, which for a big Ohio boy is saying a lot.”

Natives in the parts of the world where it is cultivated refer to it as the Queen of Fruits or Fruit of the Gods because of its taste and incredible medicinal value. It’s rich in essential nutrients and provides multifaceted aid to the body.

Here’s just 3 of the many amazing health benefits of mangosteen:

1. Antioxidants. Mangosteen contains xanthones, a class of polyphonic compounds that have been shown to have beneficial effects on cardiovascular diseases, display anti-tumor activity, and boost the body’s immune system. One study showed mangosteen to inhibit the growth of skin cancer cells.

2. Regulates Digestive System and Helps Maintain Healthy Weight. Mangosteen is rich in dietary fiber, which helps the body digest food more efficiently and better absorb nutrients. It’s also low in calories (63 calories per 100 g), and contains no saturated fats or cholesterol. On top of all that, it’s rich in vitamins, including B-complex vitamins which help the body’s metabolism.

3. Anti-inflammatory. Mangosteen has been shown to reduce inflammation, which alleviates respiratory issues and mobility issues where there is inflammation in the joints. It also has anti-allergy effects by acting as a natural antihistamine.

Other health benefits include improving acne, reducing risk of a heart attack, boosting immune heath, and lowering blood sugar.

Because of its wide range of nutrients and overall fortifying effects on the body, mangosteen makes a great addition to your daily diet.
